Cute as a 'button'

On Saturday I had the privilege of taking pictures of the loveliest family, including this handsome little man. It was such a joy to be in their home. There's a special kind of feeling in a home when a new baby arrives - a calm, warm, peaceful feeling, and this home was just full of that kind of love.

It was also wonderful to photograph a little boy, I haven't done that since Nathaniel was little and I so enjoyed it. He was so good for me too, a wonderful sleeper, and didn't mind too much being moved and cuddled. I am now enjoying edited this little man's pictures, and look forward to being done soon.

My favourite style of photography...

I've been thinking about this a lot lately - what is my favourite style of photography? It's almost as difficult to choose as picking my favourite movie or song. I certainly love the very precise style involved in photographing new babies - the props, the unique studio set up, the up-close intimate pictures - lovely. Then there's the studio style - plain backgrounds with a focus on the individual, this style of photography can really draw out a persons character. Finally the natural style. Outdoor, beautiful light, families and children just doing what they do - I love it!

So I've decided not to pick a favourite, but just to enjoy them all, they all have so much to offer. The exciting thing is that there are so many more styles to discover and explore with clients in the future.

Autumn Family Portraits...

A few months ago Jason mentioned that he really wanted some pictures of his family on our walls at home. I couldn't have agreed more.
So we made arrangements to get together to take some photographs. These are the results.

What a handsome bunch - and Lou & Danika - Just beautiful!

I just love these pictures - how handsome is my little nephew?
And my sweet niece has the cutest 7 year old smile - I love it!

Oh my, how this little girly has grown.
My boys adore her and her 3 year old gumption!

The granddaughters are a little outnumbered by all those grandsons, but they sure are pretty, and the boys are all rough and tumble and just exactly what boys should be.
How wonderful for them to say that they belong to this family!

Some pictures just take your breath away... Weston-super-Mare Children's Portrait Photographer

A few dear friends came to visit a few weeks ago, and whilst they were with us I took the opportunity to take a few pictures of their children. Have you ever seen such beautiful eyes?
I edited the pictures in colour and then wondered whether they would work well in black and white.

Well, just look - stunning! Simply stunning are the only words I have to describe these beautiful children. And of course, spending the weekend with them I know that they have the most incredible little personalities to match.

Creative Live

A few months ago a good friend linked me to the creative live programme in the US. I was able to join a worldwide classroom learning amazing tips from the great wedding photographer Jasmine Star. In a few weeks time I'll be entering the classroom again to be schooled by Tamara Lackey in Children's Portrait Photography. The last course was really amazing I am so looking forward to being apart of this one. To join in too, register here.

Moo minicards

I am a big fan of moo, they are just one of the companies I use for printing. One of their signature pieces are these unique little business cards. The card used to make them is sourced from sustainable forests, and the print quality and finish is wonderful. A box of 100 costs just over £10 - Bargain! For no extra cost I'm also able to print different styles to suit my clients - each card advertises my various areas of photography - babies, young children, teens and families. I just love them - can't wait to hand them out to potential clients - but which one do I choose?

Backgrounds & Perspective

Last night I taught my photography class at church. It went really well and we all had so much fun snapping pictures of each other. I hope the information I shared, and the way I shared it was interesting and will help improve the way we photograph our families. I'm just so passionate about what I do it was so great to share that with others.

Continuing with my tutorials today is about backgrounds & perspective. Here's what I taught last night.

  1. Keep your background simple
  2. Creative with colour - Leafy green, autumn browns, creamy walls etc
  3. Consider the context of your picture
  4. Look around the four corners of your viewfinder
  5. Adjust your position to hide distractions in the background
  6. Try making a simple backdrop
  7. Use the rule of thirds
  8. Perspective - more flattering to shoot from above
  9. Perspective - little ones get down on their level
  10. Tilt your camera slightly

Today's tutorial - Light!

Light Baby!
It's everything when it comes to photography. These photographs are for next weeks demonstration - my boy : early October evening, lovely light, but not much of it!
I used my reflector to show the effect of changing light on a portrait picture. Each of these pictures are straight out of the camera - so not my best work, but they do illustrate my points.
  1. Light has a colour - compare the gold and silver pictures. Look at how much warmer the gold reflector picture is. And
  2. If you don't have enough light, give it a boost - don't be afraid to used something to reflect light. Jarom's eyes look wonderful in the silver reflector picture

So today's lesson - search out good light. Good photographers light is often called indirect light - light that is diffused (by clouds or a shady tree), blocked (by a wall, fence or just inside the doorway of your home) or reflected. If there isn't enough light try giving it a little boost by using a reflector (water, a white sheet of card or even silver foil from the kitchen make good reflectors).
Give it a try, see what a difference good light makes!

Photographing Your Family part 1

Getting to Know Your Camera

How do digital cameras work?

Rather than using film a digital camera uses a sensor to record the image and then saves it onto the memory card. Pictures can easily be transferred to a PC for you to edit or share with family and friends.

Compact or DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex)?

Price, size & weight, movie mode, electronic v’s manual zoom, zoom range, quality in low light situations are all differences between compact and DSLR cameras.

Resolution

A digital photo is made up of millions of tiny dots or megapixels (MP). The higher the number of megapixels, the more detail the camera can capture in an image. If you want to print larger than a standard 6”x4” (15cm x 10cm) photo, then a high number of pixels will give you better results. A high megapixel camera will also give you more flexibility to crop images and maintain detail when printing at full size. The more megapixels the camera uses, the more space the pictures will take up on the memory card. As a guide 3 mega pixels - 6”x4”, 5 mega pixels - 6”x8”, 10 mega pixels A3 size, the quality of your prints may vary between different camera models and different printers.

Digital Memory

Images are recorded onto a memory card, which can be removed from the camera and inserted into a PC, laptop or printer. Many printers now have memory card slots, which allow you to print your pictures directly from the card without the need for a PC.

High megapixel cameras record a lot of detail and use up the memory quickly. It’s worth considering buying large capacity or additional memory cards to save the disappointment of running out of space.

Shoot and review with ease

The LCD screen on the back of a digital camera is your way of framing and reviewing your photos. Use the screen to compose your pictures and then look back at the results. The beauty of this is that you can re-take the picture if you don’t like your first attempt. It’s a good idea to find a camera with a large LCD screen that you can see easily. Some digital cameras now have basic built-in editing functions making it more important to have a good size screen to work with. Touch screen functions also make control of the camera functions quick and simple.

Getting up close

All digital cameras come with a built in zoom allowing you to get closer to your subject. There are two types of zoom - digital and optical.

Digital zoom electronically enlarges the centre of the image, making the subject appear closer. A digital zoom can result in some loss of definition, as the camera is not actually seeing the detail close up.

Optical zoom uses the lens optics to zoom into the scene. With an optical zoom the image captured by the camera is exactly what the lens is seeing. An optical zoom generally gives better results.

Battery

Digital cameras can be very power hungry. Many lower priced cameras take standard AA or AAA batteries, which are easily replaced when they run down. If your camera takes these batteries, it might be more economical to invest in rechargeable ones.

The best digital cameras often have built-in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LI-ION) and come with a charger. There would be no need to buy replacement batteries, unless you wanted a back-up battery for times when recharging may be difficult or not possible.

Scene modes

To give you the best results, many digital cameras have pre-programmed scene modes, which set the camera for various pre-determined scenarios, such as: portraits, landscape, night time, sports, etc. Some more advanced digital cameras now set the mode automatically, adjusting settings based on the scene it is viewing. This takes all the fuss out of changing the settings yourself.

And because I need to get to know my new camera too, here's a picture I took today of Nathaniel in the park.

Teaching...

I am so excited to be teaching a photography class next week at church. I have just an hour to cover the basics - getting to know your camera, light, background & perspective & some tips on taking the perfect portrait. I hope I can cram it all in. I'm also hoping to include some practical tutorials too, I know I learn by doing, I'm sure others do too.

I am passionate about photography, so sharing that passion is a big deal for me. I'm a little nervous about it all really. Will anyone come? What if I can't find the words to convey the ideas I have? Will they be kind with their comments and questions? I hope it will all go ok. My experience has shown that if I am prepared I don't need to worry, so I'll be spending some time over the next few days getting my thoughts together. It might be fun to post them here.

Finally posting more pictures

These pictures are from my own family shoot we did last weekend and also a small collection of pictures as a follow-up to the session I did for my friends a few weeks ago.
It feels good to be all caught up now, and ready to move on to the next project.

A family of boys - Weston-super-Mare Family Portrait Photographer

I have just finished edited my last family session, and I'm so pleased with how these pictures turned out. We had so much fun together, and I can't wait to show them all the amazing jumping shots we got from jumping off of the dunes. So it's time to book the viewing session, how about next week at your house?

Another Saturday Session - Weston-super-Mare Family Portrait Photographer

How amazing is this?
The boys, the sky, the clouds, the pose... I could go on.
Each time I snap a pose like this it takes my breath away, I love that.
These boys are just so handsome, they were great a posing!
I loved this session on Saturday, it was so much fun to spend time with people that I love and respect so much. I can't wait to sit down and properly edit each picture. There are so many great ones.

Saturday's session...

This session was long overdue. It was a birthday gift for my dearest friend. I'm so glad we were finally able to fit it in. Her children were great sports, and I loved photographing them. I'm sure when they pulled up in the car they weren't expecting the tide to be in, or the waves to be crashing onto the beach, it was such a surprise and they so wanted to play with the water, but unfortunately we had work to do. We did have fun running and jumping off the dunes, although someone ended up with a mouth full of sand - poor little guy. This is only the first of many great photographs I took. Can't wait to finish editing them all.

Just beautiful... part 2

I am so pleased with how well these pictures turned out.
Everything I wanted them to be and more.
This little girly was a joy to photograph, and however beautiful these pictures are they don't completely capture her sweetness, her smell, her peaceful way of sleeping and being.

As well as beautiful black and white pictures,
I think these sweet sugary pink toned pictures are also adorable.

That little foot is just so cute.
It's the little details that need to be captured in baby photographs, because little ones seem to grow so quickly and before you know it, those little fingers and toes are all grown.

I hope you love your pictures Gregory family, thank you for letting me take them for you.

Just beautiful...

I had the privileged of being in the most beautiful home today, it was so peaceful, and just a joy to be in, the credit goes to this beautiful mummy for her calm and sweet spirit.

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to take pictures for them. I'm also super glad I captured this sweet moment between mother and baby. I was thrilled when I saw this through the lens. This is just a quick sample, there will be more pictures to come in the following few days.

New Branding...

Well, It's a record, my old logos lasted a couple of months. Out with the old and in with the new. I'm still tweaking, but I'm quite please with this look. I can't afford to purchase a design consultant, so I often don't have a lot of confidence in my own designs, but I have given alot more thought to this one, and I feel it will be more versatile, something that was lacking in the old design. Let me know your thoughts, I'd love the feedback.

Adding to my blog...

Take time to look around my photography blog, I've included a lot of information about what you can expect from my business. My favourite area is the 'view your session' tab at the top, (under the header). It shows my photography work from the last few months, it's a great portfolio for my business.

Photographs for my home

As we continue with the seemingly never ending DIY projects in our home I have decided that enough is enough and have added a few finishing touches already. I took this picture a few weeks ago of my boys and have added it to the frame Jason gave me for my birthday last year. It looks so good on the dresser he made for me. I would post pictures, but I'm so tired of seeing unfinished walls without plaster on!

Beautiful baby girl - Weston-super-Mare Children's Portrait Photographer

This little girlies photographs are finally edited and ready to be delivered. I have to say, I'm so proud of them. I think they are some of my best pictures yet, but of course I had the most adorable baby girl to photograph. I absolutely love newborn photography.

I have used three different edits for the photographs - a soft & light edit (top), a soft & light black and white (bottom left), and I have included the original edited image (bottom right). As this was a portfolio building session I have included a copy of each of the photographs I edited as a thank you, in most of the styles above, unless in my professional opinion, I didn't feel the image was enhanced by being in a particular style.

I have a few more shoots lined up for the next few weeks - two more newborns and a family shoot, plus the weather has been so good lately I'm desperate to get down to the beach for some of my own family pictures. After that I'm looking for a couple of 'senior' models to complete my portfolio, then I'm just about ready to open for business.

Birth Announcements

I just picked up the most adorable birth announcement template for my business from the Album Cafe, and funnily enough the design is called 'Emily', I think they are just the sweetest.

Any photograph can be uploaded into the framed space and personal details added. They can then be printed in the usual way just like any other photograph. I will include the files on each newborn photo shoot disc, after discussing the details that need to be added!

I have included in this announcement another picture from my first newborn photography session, from a few weeks ago, the editing is coming along well, and I should have the pictures ready by Sunday. I actually think this little girly is the most adorable thing about these birth announcements!

I Love Packaging...

Ribbons, boxes, bags, tissue paper, stickers - this is my idea of heaven.

My stickers are from Moo. I just love this company, they are so much fun, it was a pleasure to use them for the printing of both my stickers and business cards.

Oh how I love these CD cases, I had real trouble tracking them down in this country, they are not easy to find.

Cute, cute, cute.

Finishing touches, my business cards double up as gift tags - clever huh!

Now I just need to deliver the finished product.

My first photo shoot pictures have been edited...

A little late I know, But I'm pleased with the final result. Aren't these girls just gorgeous? I'll have a disc ready shortly, packaged and ready to send. Phew..., so glad that's done. I have to say again that I loved every minute of it - taking the pictures, editing and I know I'm going to love taking the finished product round to Jenny's home.

Isn't she lovely...

Yesterday I had the privilege of taking a very special little girl's photographs. She brought her Mummy over to my home where I had set up a little studio especially for her. I loved every minute of our session together. She was such a good little girl and when she finally drifted off to sleep, posed beautifully for each of her pictures. I knew straight away that this shot would be special and I'm so glad I was right. This was my very first time at taking pictures of a newborn, apart from my own boys. Thank you so much, you were such a little sweetie. I have so many lovely pictures to edit now, I better get to it.

Details of my photography sessions...

I've added a new page with details of the photography sessions I offer. Check it out on the link above.

My first portfolio building session

On Saturday I went over to my good friend Jenny's home to take pictures of her beautiful daughters. The girls were so much fun to be with, as you know I am starved of a little girly time here in my home and I absolutely loved taking their pictures.

I got so many great pictures. This is the first of many. The girls new just how to pose and look at the camera, and each of their smiles was just so pretty. Thank you for spending the morning with me. I can't wait to have all the pictures edited and ready to drop round on disc for you to enjoy!

Saturday, 8 May 2010

As promised, a new logo

So today my logo looks like this. I really like this one. This is the logo I keep imagining whenever I picture my business. The fonts I like and the colours I love. This is the one I'm proud of that I feel will stand the test of time (at least a couple of weeks). I can imagine packaging and promotional materials etc, I think this one is a keeper.

Thursday, 6 May 2010

My new logo...

This little beauty has taken me weeks of work to produce. Ridiculous I hear you say and you'd be right. I have realised that designing logos is not my speciality. It was really hard to sum up my personality, with colours that I love, in a way that is simple yet eye catching. How do you think I did? I'm happy with it, for now. Who knows it may look completely different next week. I just don't want to give any more thought energy to this. I now have to work on business card designs, letter head templates, thank you cards, packaging ...

New all about me section

I am slowly starting to put together my photography business plan. One of my first jobs is to work on my website and my branding. So you may see some changes around here. This section being one of them. It has taken me forever to complete this section, it's so hard to sum up a life and a vision in just a few short words.

I remember thinking when I was just a little girl that I wanted to be a photographer, or maybe a teacher (doesn't every little girl want to be a teacher?). After a long detour - a degree in Psychology, marriage to my very best friend and then the birth of our three wonderful sons, I'm back on track to my dream job.

I bought my first DSLR camera in 2007, I remember being so nervous and excited as I unwrapped it from it's box and switched it on. I also remember using it for the first time - a family walk in the woods, where I took my first photographs with it, I still love those photographs.

I knew then I wanted to turn my love of taking pictures into a career. I felt then, and still do now, a passion for creating and capturing family memories through photographs.

So thanks for stopping by and reading my photography blog. Take a look around, leave a comment (something nice please), and why not book a session with me for you and your family.
